i am 26 years old and i have been diagnosed with scoliosis. i have no medical insurance and care credit has rejected my application for financial assistance. the chiropractor who initially diagnosed the condition through x-rays cannot treat me as my finances currently stand.

i sought a second opinion before i learned that financing was not an option, and was advised to seek treatment at a scoliosis specialty hospital in phoenix (i live in kc, can%26#039;t afford chiropractor, how can i afford extended travel out of state, plus medical expenses?) where i would be fitted with a brace for 3 to 6 months (again, how would i be able to be away from home that long, while raising 2 toddlers?)

is there any proven remedy for adult scoliosis? could i obtain a back brace somewhere besides a hospital or scoliosis center that could help me? i am in constant pain %26amp; can barely pick up or carry my children any more.

I was going to ask you how serious your scoliosis is, then I read that you are in constant pain. Did your chiropractor say specifically that the pain is caused by the scoliosis? If it isn%26#039;t, there may be some at-home physical therapy exercises you can do. Even if scoliosis is the problem, exercises and stretches may help. Did you chiropractor tell you the degree of the curvature? There%26#039;s really nothing you can do on your own to reverse or stop the progression of the curvature. You can just manage the pain. And, a brace would definitely help the scoliosis, but the are EXPENSIVE. I had one after my surgery, thank goodness I had insurance, because that one in particular was in excess of ten grand. You can probably order a generic one, but with the scoliosis it might be difficult to get one that will help you. My brace was custom fit to my body, because of my scoliosis, they couldn%26#039;t use and off the shelf one. But, I don%26#039;t know how you feel about medication, but ibuprofen works wonders for my back pain.

i am an english physio specialising in scoliosis treatment. from what i have experienced a brace is only usually indicated (in this country anyway) in the growth period. it seems strange for you to be recommended this at your age. is your curvature progressing? have you been diagnosed by a doctor or just the chiropractor?

i do know of an exercise treatment that helps to relieve all the symptoms of scoliosis. its based on specific corrections and exercises that you are taught and must do EVERY single day forever. its called the katarina schroth technique. its not available in english except for one clinic in the UK. I have worked at this clinic but had to leave for particular ethical reasons. i am now setting up on my own. i want to travel and help people help themselves. generally, rigid braces are only used during growth phase...

there%26#039;s a soft brace called spinecor that can be used for symptomatic relief clinically...you should know...spinecor is produced and based in UK...

Anyway..back to the main question...10 degree curve does not call for bracing...yes..even spinecor. I%26#039;d suggest that you find another chiropractor.

I am 37 and was diagnosed with scoliosis at 17. I couldn%26#039;t be braced because i had stopped growing. it just won%26#039;t work. don%26#039;t let people on this site or others try to sell you on some %26quot;special%26quot; brace, because it won%26#039;t work.

If you are considering surgery, do it now, because trust me, pain just gets worse and healing harder as you get older.

I have neck pain and have tried chiropractor, acupuncture, epidural steroid injections, nerve block...everything short of surgery. it will be cheaper for you in the long run to treat this problem now.

Plus ask your doctor about Talwin (paid med) and muscle relaxers. I take Vicodin and Darvocet for pain. Most of these drugs are generic and are pretty inexpensive. Good luck!

Since you are 26 and full grown a back brace will not help you at all. Back braces are used to PREVENT any more curving, and since you are done growing it will not do anything for you. Doctors recommend surgery if you are in constant pain.
